Brigitte Perkins
More than 20 years ago, French fashion designer Brigitte fell in love with the craft of hand-weaving while travelling in Morocco. She created Tadert Titbirine in 1995, a company of hand-weavers and embroiderers, in the heart of Marrakesh, and reinstated the age-old craft of loom-weaving, Moroccan needlework and basket weaving, and has established a worldwide reputation for beautiful, high-quality products. In collaboration with local craftsmen, the company produces exquisite fabrics – ranging from heavy cottons and linens to delicate silks – in myriad colours and designs.
Brigitte’s inspiration for her designs often comes from the bold patterns of traditional Moroccan textiles, to which she adds her own fresh, contemporary twist – and her inimitable quality of materials and workmanship means that she has become the benchmark in Morocco for traditional hand-made fabrics and embroidery. Brigitte is also passionate about supporting community projects.
Collaborations
Brigitte is passionate about passing traditions on to the next generations. She prides herself in inspiring individuals to care about the quality of their work and to work collaboratively together. Each new technique is taught to the most qualified men and women in the team, who in turn train others, encouraging strong bonds, pride in their work and a spirit of generosity. Her way of working, recognised by the ministerial Moroccan authorities, has given a boost to the sector as a whole: weaving workshops have been reopened, employing young weavers and boosting their economic prosperity.
She often collaborates with artists, and on artistic projects (for example for the Marrakech Biennale)
She works with La Fondation Orient-Occident, teaching methodology to embroiderers
She teaches embroidery at the Fondation Dar Bellarj
She works with the Summit Foundation on the Matter of Act and Mountain Propre projects, recycling glider sails into bags, necklaces and sky rugs.
